Houston Grand Opera HGOco

Houston Girls' Chorus Mission

Houston Girls Chorus (HGC) promotes leadership, teamwork and personal growth through high quality choral education and performance opportunities for young women from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. The shared study of vocal/choral technique, music history and theory, and performance practice combined with exposure to Houston's finest choral and vocal artists, promotes the values that will help young women succeed both in music and in life.

Benefits of Membership

  • A first-class music education experience, including instruction from recognized leaders in the field, master classes with nationally known artists, and the opportunity to perform throughout the city of Houston.
  • Exposure to a broad variety of musical styles and works as well as training in vocal technique, music theory and performance practice that help young women make informed and educated musical choices and provide a context for achievement as performers.
  • A peer-group experience in which young women learn and shape the values and wisdom that will impact their success as they mature.

Eligibility

  • Open to girls in 7th-12th grade; Singers are required to be involved in their school choir program.
  • Membership in HGC is by audition

Houston Girls Chorus Conductor, Kimberly Tobola

Kimberly Tobola is in her tenth year as Director of Choral Activities at Lanier Middle School where she currently conducts 6 choirs. Under her direction, the Lanier choirs have consistently received Sweepstakes ratings at UIL, participated in Houston Chamber Choir’s “Hear the Future” Invitational, appeared as demonstration choirs at University of Houston’s Kodaly Institute and received superior ratings and Best in Class awards at local festivals and contests.

Having received a BM in Vocal Performance from Baylor University, she completed a MM in Vocal Performance and her doctoral coursework at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she studied with Barbara Honn as a Corbett Scholar.

Ms. Tobola has been on the summer music conservatory faculty of AFA for four years and has recently been named Artistic Director for the AFA Houston Girls Chorus. Ms. Tobola is proud to be a founding member of VOX, a professional choral ensemble, and also serves on its board.

Houston Grand Opera HGOco

HGOco connects community and educational partners with the creative resources of Houston Grand Opera, serving hundreds of thousands of people every year. HGOco is for anyone who wants to learn more, do more, and experience more of what opera is all about through engaging observation, participation, and creation programs. HGOco performs at the Wortham, schools and communities through Student Matinees, High School Night at the Opera, Storybook and Opera to Go!, and provides education and training for students, educators and audiences through Teacher Workshops, Opera Camps, and High School Voice Studio and an extraordinary series of new works that celebrates the people who define the unique character of our city in collected stories shared in collaborative community and educational projects through the award-winning Song of Houston program. HGOco inspires Houston to create, connect and collaborate through story and song.
