Benefits of Attending the AFA Academy
- An outstanding music education experience, including instruction from some of Houston's finest musicians
- Exposure to a broad variety of musical styles and works; training in music theory and performance practice that help performers make informed musical choices and that provide a context for achievement.
- Opportunities to per form as part of AFA's annual Concert Series
Eligibility
- Open to all pianists, string, woodwind, and brass instrumentalists who have at least one to two years performance experience
- Students must be members of their school ensemble (if applicable) while enrolled
Rehearsal
- Weekly meetings include chamber music coaching and rehearsal as well as instruction in music theory.
- Rehearsals take place at AFA's studio just outside of Downtown Houston.
- Rehearsals sessions are available on Tuesdays from 5:00-7:00, Wednesdays from 5:00-7:00, Saturdays from 11:00-1:00 o r Saturdays from 1:00-3:00
- As concerts approach, additional rehearsals may be scheduled.
Performance
- Concert performances are a required part of the Academy and take place at the end of each semester in January and May; Other education and outreach concerts may be scheduled during the semester
Tuition
- $425 per semester (September-January or January-May) plus a mandatory $35 enrollment fee
- Need based tuition scholarship assistance is available (please fill out the scholarship application portion of your online application).
- AFA will work with the student and family if assistance is needed-please let us know if you need tuition assistance. Installment/payment plans are available.
Da Camera of Houston Young Artist Program
AFA is pleased to launch the Academy with assistance from Da Camera of Houston's Young Artist Program. Each season Da Camera works extensively with 12 of Houston's most talented and creative young community-minded musicians. This year, Da Camera Young Artists join with the AFA Academy in providing instrument instruction, in addition to the extensive programs they do with Da Camera's education and outreach efforts. Da Camera Young Artists hold degrees from the nation's top music conservatories and represent the very best of the next generation of artists, bringing energy and creativity to the AFA Academy.
