AFA and Brazos Bookstore Collaborate to Make New Music

AFA and Brazos Bookstore are teaming up to develop a new musical work inspired by an original literary creation in celebration of AFA’s 20th year serving young musicians throughout the greater Houston area.

For this collaboration, Brazos Bookstore has announced a writing contest taking place from October 13 through December 15, 2014. Writers from all backgrounds and working in any genre are invited to submit a short work on the theme “Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not” from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The winning selection will be used as the inspiration for a musical composition by award-winning composer Hugh Lobel that will be premiered at the AFA Collaborations Concerts in May and July, 2015. The winning author will be invited to read their work at the performances. Dr. Lobel is an accomplished composer and AFA alumnus who is being commissioned for this special work to mark AFA’s 20th anniversary.

Author Ben Fountain has been named as the contest judge. He is the acclaimed author of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award and finalist for the National Book Award. Fountain, a Dallas resident, represents Texas literature at its very best.
